Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum/maximum age for swimming lessons?

At Clare's Swim School, we believe that no matter your age, you can learn to swim and become comfortable in the water

What is the best way/time to contact you?

Our main method of contact is by email, but a phone call also works! However during the week, between the hours of 8 and 6, we will be unavailable for phone calls, because we are in the water, teaching. We will do our best to get back to you within 24 hours of your phone call/email

How many children are in a semi-private lesson?

In a semi-private swim lesson, there are 2 swimmers to 1 instructor. In a private swim lesson, there is 1 swimmer to 1 instructor

What can I do to prepare myself/my children for lessons?

Please ensure that all children have used the washroom. Children who are not fully toilet trained must wear a swimming diaper. Please apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes prior to arriving to your lesson to allow adequate time for it to soak into the skin, and provide maximum protection from sunburn. Sun screen applied too close to the start of a swim lesson simply washes off and ends up clogging our filter system whilst providing little to no skin protection. Please save snacks for after swimming lessons!

Can I have lessons in my own backyard pool?

Our instructors can save you a trip and travel to your own pool to teach! We can cover Stouffville, Goodwood, Claremont, Ballantrae and Uxbridge areas. Please email dates and times that you are interested in and we will let you know if an instructor is available. There are travel costs associated with an instructor travelling to your pool and a one hour minimum teaching charge per visit. Your pool must be heated, clean and free of algae

What happens if I miss a class?

If you know in advance that you are unable to make it to your scheduled week of lessons, let us know as soon as possible so that we can try and find a replacement. If we can find a replacement, you can reschedule your lessons or receive your payment back in full. If you are absent during the course of your scheduled week for medical reasons, we will try to fit in a make-up class(es) **This cannot not guaranteed as it depends on finding a mutually convenient time slot, instructor availability and pool space

Do lessons still run in the rain?

Lessons will run in all weather except thunderstorms! In the case of a thunderstorm, classes will be moved indoors where age-appropriate water safety and first aid lessons will be taught. If your class is cancelled due to inclement weather, we will try to fit in a make-up class. **This cannot be guaranteed as it depends on finding a mutually convenient time slot, instructor availability and pool space

Where should I park?

PARKING ON THE ROAD, OR IN FRONT OF NEIGHBORING PROPERTIES IS PROHIBITED. You must park on one of the two driveways in front of our house, even if it means that you are temporarily blocking someone in. You access the pool area by walking along the south side of the house, on the gravel driveway and to the backyard

Do lessons still run on Public Holidays?

If you choose a week where a public holiday falls, there will NOT be a lesson on that day. Please take this into account when booking your lessons

Can I bring food/drinks onto the pool deck?

There is no food or glass containers of any sort permitted on the pool deck. Water in a plastic container/water bottle may be brought onto the pool deck

Can I pay by Credit Card?

No, we do not accept any credit card. Cash, cheque and E-transfer are all acceptable methods of payment

Can I request an instructor?

Of course! However, we cannot guarantee which instructor you will receive for lessons, but we will do our best to take your request into consideration
